The Kitchen Playground method of surviving the school term with a working mother is to use school holidays to do some bulk cooking. The idea is that I will end up wit lots of baked goods for lunches and enough precooked meals to get me through the nights that we get home late. These school [...]

School holidays are upon us and I am taking great delight in being home long enough to play in the kitchen. There simply isn’t enough time for that during term anymore. Part of the fun is my annual cookbook and recipe cull. As I am hoping that a move will be on the cards within [...]

Fast and delicious. I whipped this up in 15 minutes flat for the sole purpose of work lunches. It will freeze nicely into 4 lunch sized portions. Perfect for a cold day. Easily adaptable to a saucepan and food processor or stick blender too.

Ahh Vietnamese food. It never fails to delight. Never. Every dish was hungrily gobbled and loudly praised this evening.
The soup was magical. My love for pho is not unknown but I simply did not have the time to make the stock. I’ve found my quick substitute soup. The beef and Vietnamese coriander soup is light, [...]

Unless you’ve got one of those spoiled, expensive menfolk who insist on a slab of meat at each meal, this makes a hearty [...]

It’s school holidays here at the moment. Glorious school holidays. Today, the Ankle Biters had some friends over and I got to enjoy the adult company of their respective mothers. One of the mums has coeliac disease so I took the easy way and made soup for the grown up lunch. The tricky part was [...]

Poor old First Born has one of the myriad of lurgies floating around Melbourne and took today off school. He still felt up to his regular cooking night and decided to use the extra time wisely. He made two courses.
First on the menu was chicken noodle soup. In true Kitchen Playground fashion, I’m teaching him [...]

So much for swine flu, there’s a head cold doing the rounds of Melbourne which is intensely irritating. It’s swept though chez KP leaving a trail of snot and grumpiness behind it. I decided to chase it away tonight with a very vegetable soup. I made it in the thermomix but it could easily be [...]
