Today was officially the first short sleeve and sandal day of spring in Melbourne. Utter bliss. Made even more enjoyable by my freshly spring cleaned windows. I’m in my happy place.
Just as at the start of the colder weather, soup is a fabulous meal that it seems impossible to tire of, the advent of warmer [...]

how good does that sound? Amazing huh? It was. It really was. Son and Heir practically inhaled his. Even the carroty bits. He usually hates carrot.
Now for the bad news. No recipe. That’s right. I’ve been recipe testing for Jaden’s Steamy Kitchen again. It’s going [...]

Tonight we are eating Hainan chicken and rice. I made all three sauces to go with it. Sadly I have no cilantro, nor do I have enough cucumber left to garnish. Steamed broccoli with a dash of oyster sauce will do nicely as a side dish.
The cost of tonight’s meal? I bought the chicken especially. [...]

How it warms my heart. I practically nailed the stock this weekend too. Not perfect but a 99.5 as judged by the Bread Winner. I blame the lack of licorice root which I couldn’t get for love nor money. Despite wild wind storms and days of lost power, I manged to finally get to the [...]

Finally the cool change has come. Just in the nick of time too. Lil Miss arose at 3.30 this morning. For the day. We are not amused. I have two seriously whingy Ankle Biters today. But all is well, tonight is cool and we’re eating comfort food, Vietnamese style.

Used in savoury dishes in Vietnamese cooking it is a bittersweet condiment. This was used in Caramelised Mince Pork [...]

I’ve been neglecting Into the Vietnamese Kitchen of late due to holidays and the need to clean out the freezer. I couldn’t neglect it any longer though, I was missing those heavenly flavours. So tonight, we had had the grilled chicken with salt pepper and lime dipping sauce served western style with a simple green [...]

The fridge is starting to look really bare now. The vegetable bins are actually empty. Gosh, that was possibly premature, I still have 1 or 2 more dinners to cook. Oh well, surely I have something in the freezer, that’s still pretty full. This one is Vietnamese by inspiration and was a genuine 10 minute [...]

Yesterday was a sad day. I had to return Into the Vietnamese Kitchen to the library. I tried to extend my loan but someone else had it on hold. Bugger. Double bugger if it was someone putting it on hold because of my raving about it. So I cooked a last meal from it.
Today though, [...]

We had this a couple of nights ago and I’ve been meaning to write it up. The steamed egg produced the lightest, fluffiest, omelette style dish imaginable. I’ll be using this method again with different flavour combinations. Of course I found it in Into the Vietnamese Kitchen.
Fragrant Steamed Egg, Pork & Cellophane Noodles
1 tablespoon oil
1 [...]
