Potatoes and a sundress
Jan 29th, 2009 by Dani
The top temperature in my little corner of Melbourne was 44.7 today. That’s 112.5 for those of you who do farenheit. So still not cooking weather.
Before the sun hit the backyard, I pulled out the top layer of the potato tower. Not an brilliant success but a good learning process. The lower section of the tower held the 1.3kg of potatoes that I pulled. The mulch was thick nd damp and mostly rotten. Up higher it was too loose and dry. Lessons for next time.

One thing that heat doesnt prevent is sewing. I had a massive pair of pajama pants purchased for the maternity ward that I’ve not been able to throw out. I like the fabric too much. I converte them into a sundress for Lil Miss. She was thrilled to bits and insisted on wearing it today. It looks very lopsided in the photo because she dressed herself, she is somewhat slapdash about it.

Food should reappear as a focus tomorrow. Not because it will have cooled down, because it won’t but because we’re out of leftover salad and I’ll have to feed the troops.

What beautiful looking taties! I would feel very proud to have grown those. I’m going to have a go at growing them in pots one day. I’m told it’s very do-able. Not exactly sure what a tatie tower is though…will google.
What an adorable wee dress you’ve made for Lil Miss! Love that colour, and can see why you wouldn’t want to get rid of that fabric. That girl looks pleased as punch.
I must say, I admire your ability to achieve anything in this weather. I couldn’t even sew. I just sat with my mouth open in a heat-induced stupor, and my feet in a bucket of cold water.

congratulations on your tater harvest.
Too bad raw potatoes don’t taste so good.
Hm, I wonder if you could cook them outside in a solar oven…

Oh my word, that is HOT. I wouldn’t bother with clothes at all in that kind of weather!

I am proud of them Docwitch. I grew mine in a half wine barrel and then made a frame of wire on top of that and filled it with sugar cane mulch as the plants grew up. So I effectively doubled the height of the wine barrel. Definitely give it a try, it’s lots of fun and The Moon would love digging for taties. My Ankle Biters do.
Never fear. I’ll be stupefied and wrapped in blanket come winter, moaning and groaning with the best of them.
Thanks Nate, I’ve been wanting to rig up a solar oven for ages but I think they’d get burnt
Maybe today is agood day to try it. We should be back up around the 112* mark.
Fig there, or may not, have been an incident yesterday evening with all chez KP members playing wii in their underwear

way to go on the potatoes!
It’s downright scary how much of a mini me she is Kel!
Wow! 112 in January? How warm does it actually get there? We were down in the single digits during that month. Oh, but it would be so nice to have a garden out that early
Our potatoes are just now sprouting…
