In times of worry, I cook.
Feb 9th, 2009 by Dani
Something about cooking is both comforting and cathartic. Which means I did a lot of it yesterday. I needed to feel safe, secure, to vent my sense of desolation at the terrible suffering so many families were suffering due to the fires that burn across Victoria. And more than that, my sense of helplessness and desperate need to DO SOMETHING.

So I bottled pasta sauce. Ten kilos of tomatoes converted to winter warmth. I baked two loaves of bread. Which were eaten before I could get a camera near them. I made a triple batch of European peasant bread from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes. Hopefully enough for two weeks of baking. I made pancakes for the kids, bacon, eggs, tomatoes and toast for us. I made yoghurt cheese with chives and garlic. I made sandwiches, I made eggplant parmagiana. Packed cut lunches for today. I washed so many sinks full of dishes that I lost count.
By evening I was able to be grateful that my family in stricken areas had been so very fortunate.
Then I watched the news and my heart bled a little more.

I’m glad the cooking made you feel better! My heart hurts for the victims of the fires too.

It’s heart hurty times for sure FIg. So hard to comprehend how many lives have been touched.
So glad that your family are all safe. May they remain so.
It seems we have similar responses in time of crisis - a flurry of cooking is both comforting and cathartic isn’t it?

Me too Docwitch. Eternally grateful for my family’s safety.
At least it’s a productive crisis response. Comforting, cathartic and productive. That’s win all around!
