Meal planning turned around. The verdict
Oct 31st, 2008 by Dani
The official verdict is…I am an idiot.
I am embarrassed it took me so long to work this out. Honestly. It’s so obvious. I can’t understand why I’ve been doing it back to front for so many years and hadn’t noticed.
Between the market and the garden, this week I have in stock;
- bok choy
- broad beans
- sweet potato
- royal blue and nicola potatoes
- red capsicum
- zucchini
- corn
- snow peas
- swiss brown mushrooms
- parsnip
- broccoli
- eggplant
- cabbage
- cauliflower
- cucumber
- tomatoes
- lettuce
- silverbeet
- swede
- strawberries
- mulberries
- nectarines
- rhubarb
- apples
- pears
The fruit is easy. Berries will be used in Bircher muesli. Rhubarb and apples will be used for a crumble and also muesli. Apples, pears and nectarines will be for snacking.
Meals for the week include lunches and dinner. Any gaps will be filled in by cheese and salad sandwich style lunches.
- Asian style noodle soup
- Baked potatoes with 2 cheese broccoli sauce and bacon
- Cauliflower, eggplant and silverbeet curry on brown rice
- Roast
- Roast vegetable frittata and creamed silverbeet
- Chicken, corn and risoni soup
- Silverbeet wrapped fish with fried cauliflower and tahini sauce
- Silverbeet and mushroom pie
- Silverbeet and olive tart with parmesan crust
- Corn and zucchini fritters with tomato relish
- Potatoes, broad beans and bacon
In reality, not all of these meals will necessarily happen this week. Plans can be thrown awry in so many ways. To avoid wastage, particularly as we are going away next weekend, I will make those meals first that use up what is in the fridge. Meals that depend on things still hapily in the garden will be made last. That should ensure nothing is wasted.

Love that meal plan! I know what you mean by seeming obvious, but when you have an organised system that’s worked for so long…and looking at the beautiful food you make, it looks as though you cook and eat seasonally anyway.
So I say that Dani is not an idiot! You’re just doing a little culinary revolutionising. Hehe.
Docwitchs last blog post..On Being a Mean Mama. And a Chocolate Cake Recipe Request.
True Dowitch, I have always eaten mostly seasonally, but there was certainly room for improvement. I guess it’s the local factor that I am trying to tighten up on right now, which is where my methodology had to change. I still think I’m a bit of a twit but I like culinary revolutionising better as a description.
Hmm, looking back at that meal plan (and my recent posts), can you tell I have a glut of silverbeet?
Btw Dani – thanks so much for the cake recipe. It’s delicious! The Wee Girl and I went into a baking frenzy and made it this afternoon. She insisted on icing it, (although it really didn’t need it), so we made a choc orange icing. I am in piggy heaven.

I’m glad you liked it. Choc orange icing is delicious. It must be mighty rich iced. Piggy heaven indeed. My crumble doesn’t feel so decadent now.
