Making supplies for the school boy
Dec 30th, 2008 by Dani
It’s only a month now until my baby first born leaves me to spend the majority of his waking hours at school. Yes I will bawl like a mama cow separated from her calf. I have pre-emptive separation anxiety. Son and Heir however, is bursting with excitement and already counting the sleeps, whilst telling anyone who cares to listen that he is “not a kinder boy or a creche boy anymore, just a school boy, that’s all”. His voice is fit to burst with pride as he makes his announcement.
Just before Christmas, we made a special trip to the fabric store so he could choose some fabric to brighten up his art smock and library bag. Required packed in the school bag and clearly named on the first day, or so the instruction sheet tells me. To his great delight, the dismantling of our Christmas tree made my sewing machine accessible once more and today I completed both items.
The library bag is a simple calico with Son and Heir’s chosen fabric trimming the top and on the handles. His full name is embroidered on the other side in small letters near the top, a contrasting thread to the trim fabric.

The art smock is also calico with chosen fabric making up the arms. The redwork on the pocket is from a pattern for a cute little embroidered tin cover. His name is also embroidered bottom left of the pocket.

Son and Heir is exceedingly easily pleased.

Your post is so cute and so touching…..Seriously….. I have 3 children, all grown now, two in the military….
And I remember dropping each one of them off for Kindergarten, taking photos, and driving away with tears streaming down my face.
But, as a father of three, who went through teenage with all of them…..I read your part regarding making him a smock for art class and think to myself….. Please, ENJOY this time, because they grow up so quickly and someday you might:
Have to deal with him refusing to wear anything but droopy jeans that show his underwear and wants to wear chains on his wallet, and black shirts with skulls on the shirtfront….
LOL, please understand I’m not trying to freak you out, they just change so much, and your post touched a chord in me harking back to when my “short people” were little….
And don’t worry, my “skulls” on the front of his shirt? Now wears a Navy uniform on the USS Eisenhower….. and STILL call’s his Daddy twice a week…..
Nice post….
Ron Merlins last blog post..Happy New Year
Ron thanks so much for your comment. Being the oldest of five, with a big age gap between myself and my siblings I’ve seen how quickly it passes and I treasure every moment of my two being little. I must say though, my daughters teenage years terrify me more than the thought of my son’s!
It sounds like you’ve done a fine job raising your three. I hope I can say the same when mine are grown.
