Son and Heir has been invited to a costume party. It’s his first real cstume party. Fairies and wizards don’t really count do they? The theme is to come dressed as your favourite TV or movie character.
Now Son and Heir does have a cheap Mexican knock-off Spiderman outfit in the dress up box but he’s never actually seen a Spiderman movie. I considered convincing him to wear it anyway. What he really wanted though was to be Lightning McQueen. The boy loves that movie so much. It strikes at the core of his boyishness. So I told him I’d give it a go.
First I cling wrapped the outside of my laundry basket and papier mache’d it.

Then I cut that in half and attached each half to either of a box. I folded the base and top of the box inwards.

I found another box to cut a windscreen and rear spoiler from. Then I cut slits in the papier mache to insert them into.

The whole outside was papered in white, ready to paint.

After painting, thin rope was strung through from the front and back of the box to create a harness which will hold it over Son and Heir’s shoulders.
And there you have it. One very dodgy Lightning McQueen outfit. Made with items found in the house and garage for a total cost of zero. Lucky he’s too young to be embarrassed by his mother…or is he?

It looks fantastic Dani!!! I bet he loves it xxx

Thanks Em. Luckily for me he’s easily pleased so he does love it.
Whaddya mean dodgy? That’s a veritable masterpiece! It actually looks like the thing you were aiming to achieve too. Blimey Dani, maybe you should consider pursuing a career in costume design after all. Or car design - I’ll take your Lightning McQueen over a Beamer any day.
I’m still try to figure out how to do papier mache…

That’s very inventive!
Cars is the only Pixar movie that our kids watch. All the others are too scary.

I dunno Docwitch, I’ve seen Cars more times thn I ever wanted to and my version seems to be missing that sporty sleekness. I guess the real deal wasn’t modelled on a fruit box and a laundry basket. Having said that, given my lack of artistic skill I’m not unhappy with the result.
Wow Nate, does that mean you were spared 4 gazillion viewings of Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc? Although I must say I still love Monsters Inc. Cars is a great kids movie.
Liz it was quite fun to make. Surprisingly so. I didn’t expect to enjoy it.
Dani - that’s bloody magnificent. I love women who are handy with the paper mache! no doubt my turn will come soon enough - though I’m not sure if I’m up to a Bert or Ernie paper mache costume (Sesame Street).
Kat this was only my second papier mache attempt. The first was a birthday pinata for my dog filled with liver treats (pre-Ankle Biters). Bert and/or Ernie would be decidedly difficult I would imagine.
