Half a decade of parenthood.

How can that be? Where did it go? Surely I’m not grown up enough to be the mother of a five year old. Although in actual fact, after the day we have spent celebrating the auspicious event I feel old enough to be a grandmother. Which I guess technically I am if teen pregnancies were involved (which they weren’t). Now that’s a sobering thought.
At 5.45am, I heard Son and Heir announce to Lil Miss, “hey, I’m five!”. Sure enough, within five minutes, the Bread Winner and I had a small invasion. Thus the day began. Presents were given, cards read and up we got for a birthday breakfast. Son and Heir had requested pancakes with fruit. So pancakes were duly served topped with stewed apple and sliced strawberries fresh from yesterday’s farmer’s market.

After a few hours of last minute food preparation and general organisation, Son and Heir’s chosen party guests arrived. He invited his six closest kinder friends and a non-kinder friend. Which included three younger siblings who, serendipitiously are friends with Lil Miss. Plus accompanying parents totalled 12 Ankle Biters and 10 adults for lunch. Fairy bread, sausage rolls, pizza, white chocolate crackles and the ubiquitous badly formed cake. All home made of course. I may be a good cook but I am a lousy cake decorator.
Evidence of poor cake decorating ability

The food was interspersed with the extreme sport of trampoline wrestling (don’t ask), transporting the sand from the sandpit to the cubby house, pin the flame on the rocket ship (when Son and Heir chooses a theme, he likes as much as possible to conform, the theme this year being rocket ships), a pinata, golf ball and spoon races and twister scram.
Hopefully, our guests enjoyed themselves as much as Son and Heir did. Towards the end of the party, an uncle, aunt and cousin stopped by with birthday cheer and post-party saw visits from two grandfathers a grandmother, three aunts, three uncles and three cousins. By 6.45pm, out last guests left for the day. Thank goodness I made too many pizzas, serving dinner for ourselves and remaining guests was a snap.
Birthdays are lot’s of fun but very tiring! One per year is certainly ample.

How could anyone say they are not exhausting Karen? Lot’s of fun but exhausting nonetheless.
Kel I wish you could have been there too. Thanks for being kind about the cake LOL
Docwitch until this year I had no idea how big five was. Very important indeed!
Congratulations Dani, and Happy Birthday J!
5 is huge in NZ it’s majorly huge (they start school when they turn 5, whatever time of year that may be) but regardless it’s a big milestone. I’ll happily admit I find parties thoroughly exhausting!
Thanks Jo. I love the NZ system. I think it makes a lot of sense. He would have loved to start school this week too. I’m glad I have a little more leeway though
Happy [late] birthday to Son and Heir! He is a very handsome boy.
Thanks Fig. We think he’s pretty handsome. In fact Handsome Pants is one of his many ridiculous nicknames.
That’s a really cool cake. Happy birthday to him!
