Bedside table reading matter…
Sep 25th, 2008 by Dani
Hello to the pathetic scumbag who smashed open our car window last night and stole the Bread Winner’s laptop bag. Thanks so much for creating extra work for him and for totally destroying my Friday. We’ll thoroughly enjoy forking out the excess on our insurance. Really we will. May your genitals drop off in a hideously painful manner.
Now that I’ve sent out that little cheerio, I wanted to have a brief chat about books. In the usual way of the universe, both books I had on hold at the library came at the same time. Which means I have great reading matter for the next couple of weeks and then I’l be looking for inspiration agin. So I’m putting out the call for inspiration now.
My current pile includes;
Bonk, Mary Roach. Read this, it’s fabulously informative and entertaining.
Songs of a Gorilla Nation, Dawn Prince-Hughes. Also very informative, particularly if you are interested in the autism spectrum.
The Divided Heart. Art and Motherhood, Rachel Power. I haven’t started this one yet, it was recommended by Docwitch.
Please recommend some good reading!

Fark Dani, what a shitty thing to happen. (Oops, am I allowed to swear on your blog?) Please tell me he didn’t have his laptop in siad laptop bag in the car? I have a sickening feeling he did though. Bugger.
Love the comment about the genitals…I second that motion.

Thanks Lovelies. Swearing is most definitely appropriate under the circumstances. Yes, the laptop was in the bag, along with both the BW’s passports.
I bet he’s kicking himself that he left the bag in the car rather than carrying it inside. Passports is big gigantic kick in the arse.

He wasn’t at home. He was at a work function. He thought about putting gin the boot but didn’t, he figured it couldn’t be seen where it was behind the seat. Apparently he was wrong.
Argh. Boo hiss! That is truly rotten and upsetting.
I have a most excellent and effective spell to make genitals drop off. It does come with a warning though. Mustn’t point it at boys you are fond of, or it could have…unfortunate results. My cat knows about this. Let me know if you need it. Hmm…maybe not.
btw - I’ve heard of Songs of a Gorilla Nation, (the Bloke’s sis has aspergers, so we keep an eye open for these kinds of books). I’d be interested to hear how you go with it.
I have a swag of delish books on the go at the moment. Mainly of the crafting ilk. And I just returned from a family drive-by the library tonight, and scored Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and some more Wodehouse.

Docwitch I’m up to the last pages of Gorilla Nation. I’ve really enjoyed it. Her writing style is a reflection of what she is saying about how she thinks and feels about things. I was most struck by how her diagnosis allowed her more personal freedom in the respect that she no longer felt compelled to be ‘normal’. From her point of view, being labelled by a condition is a positive, not a negative. Which is so contrary to what I so often see in the parents of children on the autism spectrum. Definitely worth reading.
The Omnivore’s Dilemma is one I keep forgetting that I want to read. Thanks for that. Will go search for it now. I’d lve to find some Wodehouse I haven’t read Or I could just reread. I haven’t for ages.
I loved Songs of the Gorilla Nation. Fabulous book.
I’m currently reading Life of Pi, and it’s pretty good, if you haven’t checked it out already.
Laptop-stealer is a putz. I hate that guy.
Sorry about losing the laptop and the passports. That just sucks big time. And in this day and age of identity theft, that could suck even more. I hope he had strong passwords on the hard drive.
I’ve been reading “Will Write for Food” by Diane Jacob. And eye-opening discussion of what it takes to be a food writer nowadays.
Thanks Fig. Have read Life of Pi a few years back. Enjoyed it too.
So true Nate. All our passwords have been changed. Passports are listed as stolen. Some customised changes existed on the lap top so we’re hoping the scum do something silly and get caught. I’ll look into the Diane Jacob book, thanks for the recommendation.
booooooo. hopefully it was a work laptop? pain in the ass about the passports though, they’ll be a nightmare to replace…
books, hmm, books… i’ve read quite a few this year that i enjoyed. i just finished Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald and it had me pretty fascinated the whole way through. What Is the What by Dave Eggers was great… you’ve probably already read them but if not, i thought The Poisonwood Bible and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver were both great. and, surprisingly, i picked up Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes at an op shop for 50¢ when i was pregnant and desperate for some light reading and it turned out to be a fabulous foodies memoir of an american living, cooking and growing in tuscany, not the female midlife crisis that i thought it was going to be based on the movie that was made from it. a lovely surprise and if you haven’t read it, i recommend it fully. it had me inspired to cook yummy, simple fresh pasta dishes for weeks afterward.
(sorry for the extended comment rife with run on and incomplete sentences)

oh, one more thing - have you check out Goodreads? http://www.goodreads.com
another bloggy friend sent me a “friend” invite and it’s kinda neat, you can list the books you’ve read/are reading and check out what your friends are reading. i’ve also found it pretty handy to keep track of books that i want to read there so i don’t forget them.

Thanks Leslie. Will check out goodreads. I’ll look up your recommendations at the library. The Poisonwood Bible is the only one f them I have read,
Don’t know if I mentioned but a couple months back I read Mr Golightly’s Holdiay by Salley Vickers. I’m now reading another of hers, Miss Garnet’s Angel. Both wonderful.
Horror, horror re laptop and passports.
Will talk to you tonight.
Love
Jen
Thanks Jen. Will look them up too. Lot’s of lovely ideas now. That will keep me out of mischief for a while.
