An impromptu Cup Day BBQ
Nov 4th, 2008 by Dani
I love Cup Day. There is nothing as ludicrous as a public holiday for a horse race and I love it. We totally dropped the ball on organising anything this year but fortunately we have friends who are just as slack. So an impromptu BBQ was planned at 8.30 this morning.
I had defrosted some wonderful little creek cornish snags and pickled some cabbage last night so I just had to throw together some salads and bake some bread. This is where the thermomix is worth it’s weight in gold. Inside three hours, as well as showering, dressing and tidying the house, I had picked some lettuce, celery and spring onions, made a big green salad, whipped up a batch of mayonnaise and made a potato salad, pickled some swiss brown mushrooms, baked two loaves of pane toscano and made two jugs of sangria. A lovely luncheon feast for eight with just enough salad leftover for tomorrow’s lunches.
Frankly I was too tipsy full to want dinner. The Bread Winner decided we should order pizza. The thing is, the way we live, the food we eat, it’s too good. Real fresh food is beyond compare. I couldn’t bring myself to throw $20 at someone to give us an awful pizza made out of low quality ingredients. Instead, I used up about $2 worth of pantry items and served up a tomato tuna pasta. Which took roughly the same amount of time as it would have taken to find a take away meu and call the store.
Then I went for a nice long run to sweat out the sangria.
