Party Fare for First Born’s 4th
Oct 28th, 2007 by Dani
Son and heir has his fourth birthday party today. A kid’s party at a local children’s farm which I chose largely because it was self-catered. Most venues that do kids party insist that you feed your kids with their preservative ridden muck. No thanks. I have a little more respect for my offspring than that. Parents still come along at this age so I wanted enough to proved a light lunch for both kids and adults. I like to serve the adult food separately too because kids are grotty little things.
For the kids:
Fruit platter
Popcorn with butter and salt
For the adults:
Soaked wheat crackers from Nourishing Traditions
Hommus. I used the thermomix recipe. So quick and easy.
French onion dip. Ok, totally ideologically unsound but I love it and it’s a tribute to my gorgeous friend Kelly who always makes it for parties but disappeared to live in Calgary so now I have to make my own.
Tzatziki. Who needs a recipe? Just make sure you use a LOT of garlic.
Layered Mexican dip. Another Kelly specialty. Miss you gorgeous.
White bean and rosemary dip. I adapted this one. It’s the best I could remember from a recpe I couldn’t find. So I can’t credit the original because I can’t remember who’s it is.
I can cannellini beans
Tablespoon fresh rosemary
2 cloves garlic
80 ml cream
squeeze lemon juice.
Give first three ingredients 5 seconds in the thermomix on speed 6. Add cream, cook for 5 minute at 90 degrees on reverse speed 1. Stir lemon juice through.
Chicken liver pate from Nourishing Traditions
For both adults and kids:
Lovely little preservative free pork chipolatas with bread and homemade tomato preserve. Well it would have been served with the preserve had the Bread Winner not dropped it on the ground whilst setting up.
Mini chicken drumsticks marinated in homemade plum sauce.
Kettle preservative free chips
Last but not least…the cake…I made the Spice Cake from Nourishing Traditions. The rabbit shape (as requested by First Born) is from Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book.

And it was all delicious, thank you so much for having us. Neither Will nor I had to eat again till dinner lol.
And absolutely no sugar come-down either, bliss
Thank you for coming : ) We didn’t have dinner either, just party scraps. The joys of an additive free party, J didn’t have any form of meltdown either despite being over tired and overstimulated. Much different to how he was after last week’s parties.
I’m glad I was there in spirit! It looks like you had a great time.
i miss you too!!!
